It comes greater than a decade after Haida Gwaii dropped its earlier title of Queen Charlotte Islands as a part of a reconciliation settlement between B.C. and the Haida Nation.

The archipelago was named Queen Charlotte Islands after one of many ships of British explorer George Dixon in 1787, who named his ship after the spouse of King George III. The village was given the identical title by settlers in 1908.

Kris Olsen, mayor of the Village of Daajing Giids, mentioned the group was honoured to simply accept the request of Indigenous elders to revive the village’s unique Haida title, which council unanimously authorised in April.
