Supreme Court says Biden can’t restore immigration enforcement plans for now

Date:

Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the courtroom’s liberal wing — Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson — in specifying they might have granted the request. The vote was Jackson’s first public motion since being sworn in final month.

Earlier this month, the Justice Division requested the Supreme Court docket for an emergency keep after lower-court rulings. The administration requested that, at a minimal, the ruling take impact solely in Texas and Louisiana, the 2 states that introduced the authorized problem.

“That judgment is thwarting the Secretary’s course of the Division he leads and disrupting DHS’s efforts to focus its restricted assets on the noncitizens who pose the gravest risk to nationwide safety, public security, and the integrity of our Nation’s borders,” Solicitor Normal Elizabeth Prelogar wrote within the Justice Division’s submitting.

The rules, issued by Homeland Safety Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in September, have been a part of the Biden administration’s effort to maneuver away from former President Donald Trump’s extra aggressive strategy to immigration enforcement.
