Richmond firefighters battled a big blaze in East Richmond Saturday.

The hearth broke out simply earlier than midday on No. 5 Highway and Williams Highway in what seemed to be an empty property situated beside the Ling Yen Mountain Buddhist temple.

Craig Sherlock was at Garry Level Park in Steveston, about 9 kilometres away, when he noticed an enormous plume of smoke. “It was fairly massive, I assumed a home was on fireplace,” he mentioned.

Sherlock drove to the hearth and noticed firefighters battling what appeared to be a brush fireplace.

A volunteer on the Ling Yen temple mentioned they known as 911 after smelling smoke and seeing the blaze.

Workers from the temple activated an out of doors sprinkler to maintain the hearth at bay. “Our temple was not impacted,” mentioned the lady, who declined to present her identify. “The hearth didn’t come over to our aspect.”

Richmond RCMP briefly closed No. 5 Highway north of Seacliff Highway and south of King Highway, in addition to Williams Highway east of Seacote Highway. Each roads have since reopened.

TransLink mentioned it needed to detour the 405 bus as a consequence of a “highway block” on its route.
