Israeli actor taking on Tevye in U.S. tour of Fiddler on the Roof

Israeli actor Yehezkel Lazarov will be heading to the United States this fall to take on an iconic role: Tevye the Milkman.

Lazarov, a veteran of stage and screen, will enter the lead role in Fiddler on the Roof when the production departs Broadway and heads across the US. The show will make its first appearance on the road in October in Syracuse, New York.

Be the first to know –

Lazarov confirmed to The Jerusalem Post on Monday that he would be joining the production for the coming year.

The revival of the classic musical hit Broadway in 2015, with director Bartlett Sher and producer Orin Wolf, received acclaim for the production. Now, Sher and Wolf are taking the show – which closed on Broadway in 2016 – on the road. Tickets are already on sale through August 2019, with dates in New York, Florida, California, Texas and more.

Lazarov – who is currently appearing in The Chorus Line at the Cameri Theatre in Tel Aviv – has a long and storied career of directing, acting, dancing and voiceover work. The Tel Aviv native has starred in the films Three Mothers, Waltz with Bashir, The Dybbuk and the TV shows The Mentalist, Ta’agad and Mama’s Angel, among many others.

Of course, Lazarov will hardly be the first Israeli to inhabit the character of Tevye the Milkman. While the Broadway role was originated by Zero Mostel, it was later made famous on both stage and film by Haifa native Chaim Topol.

And while Lazarov won’t quite be on Broadway, two other Israeli actors are representing the Jewish state on the Great White Way this year. Sasson Gabai is already portraying Tawfiq – the role he originated in the film The Band’s Visit – in the musical adaptation; and Shiri Maimon will step into the role of Roxie in the stage version of Chicago next month.
