A 12-year-old girl has been bitten by a shark in what is the second attack at Cid Harbour in the Whitsunday Islands in 24 hours.
She is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after being mauled on the thigh and suffering significant blood loss.
A similar attack occurred less than 24 hours before, where a 46-year-old woman was bitten on her leg and torso but is now in a stable condition in Mackay hospital.
reports that the girl was with her father and sister when she was attacked, and was given pain relief and three pints of blood on the flight to Mackay hospital, where a trauma team was waiting on her arrival.
Sea World marine services director Trevor Long told reporters that shark attacks, let alone two in 24 hours, were a “very unlucky and extremely unfortunate” in the “relatively safe” Whitsundays.
“There’s probably four species that could be involved in it, probably the worst of those species would be a tiger shark,” he said.
Fisheries Minister Mark Furner also said that the events of the last few days were not a common occurence.
“Shark attacks in these waters are rare. That’s why these events are so shocking.”
